When considering a new business broadband solution there are a few options to compare. These include SoGEA (standard business broadband), Fibre to the Premises and Leased Lines. The best solution for you will depend on your wants and needs.

So is fibre broadband actually any good? How fast is it? And what are the different types of fibre broadband available? Let’s get straight into it…

What is Fibre Broadband?

Fibre broadband is an internet connection that’s transferred through fibre optic cables underground. Fibre optic cables use thin strands of glass to transmit information at the speed of light, enabling a faster and more reliable connection.

There are two main types of fibre; FTTC and FTTP.

FTTC stands for Fibre to the Cabinet. As the name suggests, the fibre optic cables go to the cabinet in the street and then copper wires connect your business/home to the cabinet. FTTC is currently being phased out and replaced with FTTP or SoGEA.

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) fibre cables run directly into your home or business and allow for much greater speeds and reliability.

How does fibre broadband work?

It makes use of a network of fibre optic cables to supply high-speed data over further distances. The data travels down the cables at the rate of light. This enables you to receive much quicker download speeds and a extra reliable connection to the internet.

According to Ofcoms 2022 report, full fibre coverage continues to increase from 28% to 33% in just 4 months. This will continue to increase as most businesses are making the switch to fibre due to their increased internet use and the requirement for improving their communications.

How Does Fibre Compare to a Standard Broadband Connection?

Here at Yo, our Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) packages offer speeds up to 4.5 times faster than standard business broadband. SoGEA (or standard business broadband) provides speeds of up to 76Mbps. FTTP, on the other hand, enables speeds up to 360Mbps. Not only that, FTTP is typically more reliable than standard business broadband too.

The actual speed you’ll get can depend on how far your home is from the cabinet or telephone exchange, as well as some other dependencies including:

  • Speed of your device
  • Internal wiring in your home
  • Number of people using the network
  • The time of day

What are the Benefits of Fibre?

With data travelling as fast as the speed of light, one of the main benefits of fibre is the speed. Not only that, with FTTP speed and performance are not impacted by distance or demand. The service is far more reliable. With a faster and more reliable internet connection your team can work more efficiently and productively.

Does your business need Fibre?

If your business relies on its internet connection for its communications, then having an unreliable connection could be loosing you money and time. Choosing a fibre connection for your business ensures you can host reliable telephony systems, video conferencing, and cloud storage for multiple users at once.

The increased speed and reliability from business broadband will allow your systems to stay online with less interruptions and down time compared to standard ADSL connections. Switching to fibre will allow you to futureproof your business, with some of the older technologies now being phased out, it’s important you don’t get left behind!
